Travel Inspired Wedding Cake
Wedding Cake Project Brief
We loved, loved, loved making this cake! Originally when the Bride came in to discuss a wedding cake we were decorating another cake which had a similar theme, it was from this that the design of the cake started.
The Bride and Groom were lucky enough to have a graphic designer as a close friend who designed various aspects of their wedding invitations, table plans etc, the couple were keen to have as many of their own personal aspects on the cake as possible and supplied us with the images, this made it possible for us to put these graphics on the cake and tie the theme together.
How We Made The Wedding Cake
Due to the painting detail and the heavy sugar models on top of the cake the Bride agreed that a fake tier would work better as the top tier. The nautical star that we painted was a simplified image of the one that the Bride and Groom had on their wedding invitations, as were the travel stamps that we also hand painted on. The quote on the second tier was also hand painted and taken from the Bride and Grooms wedding stationery. The map on the bottom tier we decided to adapt and paint in gold, this was done with edible food paints and added a lovely sheen and lustre to the base of the cake.
The Bride and Groom toppers were handmade and were created in stages. The suitcases had various miniature travel stamps painted on to them, and were from the Bride and Grooms previous travels. The Brides dress and Grooms suit was made using modelling paste, we were given various pictures to work from so that we could get the sugar models as close to the real thing as possible.
Wedding Cake Ingredients
The Bride and Groom decided to go for a simple Vanilla Sponge filled with raspberry preserve and fluffy buttercream for the base tier and a rich chocolate fudge cake filled with chocolate ganache for the second tier.
